Putapaka: Ayurvedic Eye Rejuvenation Treatment
Putapaka is an Ayurvedic eye therapy that involves applying lukewarm medicinal juice around the eyes, held in place with a frame. It is typically performed after Tarpana treatment to restore eye strength and reduce any adverse effects of Tarpana. Putapaka is also used independently to treat persistent inflammations, irritative eye conditions, and eye ulcers.
Procedure:
- Preparation: A lukewarm medicinal juice is prepared using the Putapaka Vidhi technique.
- Application: The juice is kept around the eyes using a ready frame, allowing the eye tissues to absorb the medicine’s properties.
Benefits:
- Relieves dry eyes
- Strengthens and enhances vision
- Alleviates refractive errors
- Reduces the risk of night blindness and corneal ulcers
- Provides a cooling sensation and cleanses the eyes
- May prevent cataracts and glaucoma
- Helps prevent conjunctivitis and other inflammatory eye lesions
Duration:
- Treatment Time: 20–30 minutes, depending on the physician’s advice and condition severity.
- Treatment Course: Generally ranges from 7 to 14 days, based on individual needs.
Mode of Action:
- Therapeutic Cooling: The warmth from the medicinal juice allows the active compounds to penetrate the eye’s inner layers, reaching the epithelium.
- Complement to Tarpana: Following Tarpana, Putapaka helps normalize the eye by reducing excessive nourishment or oleation, making it a balancing therapy for the eye.
Indications:
Putapaka is recommended for:
- Refractive errors and dry eyes
- Conjunctivitis and watery eyes
- Computer vision syndrome and eye strain
- Cataracts, glaucoma, and night blindness
- Ptosis, eye stiffness, and roughness
- Corneal ulcers and eye inflammation
Contraindications:
Avoid Putapaka in cases of:
- Certain infectious eye diseases
- Severe headaches or fevers
- Specific cancerous conditions
- Allergy to herbs or drugs used in Putapaka
When performed under the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician, Putapaka is an effective method for nourishing, protecting, and restoring eye health.
