Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)

Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP): Ayurvedic Insight and Approach

Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a group of genetic diseases that cause progressive degeneration of the retina. Patients with RP often experience initial symptoms like night blindness and a narrowing of the visual field, which may progress into tunnel vision over the years. By their 40s or 50s, many people with RP may become legally blind.

Causes of Retinitis Pigmentosa

Retinitis Pigmentosa is primarily a genetic disease that often runs in families, with various known and unknown genes contributing to its development. Consanguineous marriages (marriage between blood relatives) can increase the likelihood of RP. Although it is genetic, environmental factors can also influence the progression of the disease.

Symptoms of Retinitis Pigmentosa

  • Night blindness
  • Gradual decrease in vision
  • Constricted visual field (tunnel vision)
  • Floaters and flashes in vision
  • Color blindness as the disease progresses

Ayurvedic Approach to Retinitis Pigmentosa

In Ayurveda, RP is understood to begin with a disturbance in the kapha dosha, which then involves pitta and finally vata, leading to degeneration and potential blindness. Although genes are a core factor, Ayurveda believes that creating a nourishing and balanced internal environment can minimize gene expression and protect the retina.
