Ksheeradhara Therapy

Ksheeradhara Therapy: Ayurvedic Milk-Based Dhara Treatment

Ksheeradhara, also known as the “milk flow” therapy, is a specialized Ayurvedic treatment that utilizes warm, herbal-infused milk to rejuvenate and calm the body and mind. This therapy, lasting approximately 40 minutes, is commonly practiced in Kerala and follows seven traditional massage positions to ensure thorough treatment. Depending on the area of application, Ksheeradhara can be categorized into:

  • Shirodhara: Milk is poured over the forehead and scalp, focusing primarily on the head.
  • Sarvangadhara: Milk is poured over the entire body, excluding the head.

Procedure:

  1. Preparation: A suitable type of oil is initially applied to the scalp to prepare the patient for the treatment.
  2. Herbal Milk Infusion: A nozzled pitcher is used to pour warm, medicated milk, enriched with herbal decoctions tailored to the individual’s needs, over the designated treatment area.
  3. Assistance: Three attendants typically conduct the procedure, with two attendants continuously pouring the milk and one refilling the vessel to ensure a consistent, soothing flow.
  4. Seven-Position Massage: The patient undergoes treatment in seven different positions, allowing the milk to nourish and calm the entire body or focused areas effectively.

Duration of Treatment: Approximately 40 minutes.
