Cataract

Cataract: A Common Cause of Blindness

Cataract is the most common eye disease associated with aging, responsible for the highest percentage of blindness worldwide. It is characterized by opacity in the lens fibers, which changes its appearance from clear to opaque, obstructing vision. The disease manifests in various patterns, including central, cortical, and floral types. While cataracts are most common in people over 60, they can also develop in individuals as young as 40 or 50. Some may also develop cataracts as a result of long-term medication use, eye injuries, or genetic conditions leading to congenital cataracts.

Symptoms of Cataract

  • Hazy vision
  • Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
  • Excessive watering of eyes
  • Possible glaucoma development as a complication

Who is at Risk for Cataract?

  • Diabetic patients
  • Individuals frequently exposed to high temperatures or bright light

Treatment of Cataract in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, cataract is thought to be caused by the vitiation of all three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Early diagnosis is key, as Ayurveda believes cataracts can be reversed in the initial stages. Treatments aim to reduce opacity and slow progression, potentially improving vision.
